GARY NORTH'S TIP OF THE WEEK

Your car insurance premium is affected by your credit score.

The insurance companies are based on statistics. The companies are always  looking for hidden statistical relationships.

They have discovered that people with high FICO scores are less likely to file claims. So, they charge less to these clients, i.e., they offer discounts.

Different states have different discount rates for people with high credit scores. There is a map that tells you how hard low-score drivers are hit in each state.

This is another reason for getting up your credit score. I have dealt with strategies to do this in a recent tip.

Work on this.

Buying smart.  In this case, airline tickets.  Then a rental car.  Then a hotel.  Is it best to buy a package?  Doesn't look like it.  How can I buy a package of the cheapest of the cheapest of each--hotel, car, and flight?

"Buy airline tickets."

I tried the Franz and Stilko toilet paper filters but they never did clean the oil and oil, especially conventional oil, DOES "wear out". Now I use NAPA platinum filters and change the oil when it gets dirty on the theory that oil is the cheapest thing I can put into the engine: It's gone when it feels chalky; don't wait until then to change it. The only effective oil cleaning systems are aircraft and marine (turbine NOT piston engines) hydraulic and lubrication systems, and the only oil that never gets changed (whale oil content) but stays clean is the shaft bearing oil on ships and it is cleaned by a centrifugal oil cleaner, NOT a filter.

Try this.

On two separate occasions, my car almost stalled.  The engine lugged starting out from a stop. The Maintenance Req'd light came on.  Apparently, this light is strictly for oil changes.  That is what I was given to understand.

Then I checked my battery connection.  The 1/8 cable exposure was aged and frayed, so it could be the battery cable.  Richard, Stupid Richard pointed me to the corrosion build up on the battery and he proceeded to get hot water and pour it all over the corrosion.  It did seem to dissolve the corrosion a little.

Then a friend says
Corrosion is easy to clear up.  Not hot water.  Very bad.  Use a tablespoon of baking soda in 8 ounces of water, mix thoroughly until clear, brush over all areas of corrosion, and wipe off residue with a rag. Be sure to wear rubber gloves.
Then he ads
Then he ads  Go to Wal-Mart.  Buy a red or black cable, depending on positive or negative.  Follow the cable to where it bolts to whereever it bolts to.  Usually a 9/16 wrench or socket, unscrew it. Remove terminal at other end from battery.  Take new cable and reverse process.  20 minutes.
That was as clear as mud.  I'll need to buy a new battery cable.

This presentation may be better.  Went to start the car and all we got was that "click" in the engine bay.  Dialectric tune-up grease?

What is wrong with Richard?

Richard no longer does decent service; in fact, it's indecent.  It's corruptible.  I had work done here on 3 separate cars.  I've recommended him to family, who actually liked his service. If you are Chinese and a woman, Richard might give you good service. Being a regular customer does not mean anything any more. Money today flows too easily.  Lots of Mercedes Benz ad Lexuses drive into his garage where he can earn $500 a car any time of the day or week.  But his business scruples have absolutely fallen apart.  Over the course of 20 years he is now burning me on price and on service.  I get my oil changed, assuming that my filter is also changed, only to find out that my car takes an additional 2 quarts of 20/50 oil one week after he changes it.  He doesn't have to like me; that's not what I am expecting.  But I am expecting ethical service. If I bring my car in, I expect it to be serviced as promised.  Richard no longer does this with me.  And I found similar responses online at Yelp.  I wished I had known.  Still, if you're Chinese, he might give you good service.

For most people the majority of expenditures are in these top 7 categories:

Transportation
Food
Healthcare
Housing
Energy
Education
Entertainment

Now, imagine what would happen if the cost of these items plummeted.

According to Peter Diamandis this is what the future holds. He calls it the "rapid demonetization of the cost of living."

"Powered by developments in exponential technologies, the cost of housing, transportation, food, health care, entertainment, clothing, education and so on will fall, eventually approaching, believe it or not, zero." With special emphasis on "zero."

Take, for example, transportation:

"The automotive market (a trillion dollars) is being demonetized by startups like Uber. But this is just the beginning.

"When Uber rolls out fully autonomous services, your cost of transportation will plummet.

"Think about all of the related costs that disappear: auto insurance, auto repairs, parking, fuel, parking tickets. Your overall cost of "getting around" will be 5 to 10 times cheaper when compared to owning a car.

"This is the future of "car as a service."

"Ultimately, the poorest people on Earth will be chauffeured around."
