Garmin GPS or TomTom.

The Garmin Nuvi 55 had a top-rating.  At Amazon, it is declared a "best seller."  Cost?  $97.22.  There are other Garmin Nuvi 55s that are cheaper.
A refurbished Tom Tom Go 50s goes for $67.  Not bad.

A Tom Tom VIA 1515M 5-inch Portable Touch Screen goes for $85.

Could not see or hear a distinctive difference.  Neither, for the money, impressed me.  Just stick with Google's GPS, especially if you're getting used to the routes.  A Garmin may be more accurate but so far I have yet to see evidence of that fact.

As far as graphics, the Garmin seems to offer a grid with alternate road options either in case of traffic or accidents or both.  So that might be something worth considering.

Okay, this video was good for the comments, most of which recommended Garmin and pointed out flaws of TomTom.

This video covers the features of 5 different GPS Navigation Systems.
What else?

So the Garmin does not rely on your data connection, battery, or . . .
Garmin specializes in GPS navigation solutions for hikers, bikers, and drivers.  Great maps and good user-interfaces.

On the front is the gorgeous 6" touchscreen display.  12 volt power lead from the cigarette lighter.

Knew nothing about Garmin until today.

Be sure to give eBay a look before you buy.  They got some pretty decent prices.
